FeaturedIn anticipation of the announcement of the Academy Award (Oscar) nominations for films made in 2023, on January 23, 2024, with awards presented on March 10, 2024, Filmsite presents the Greatest Films of the Year 2023. Each of the films in the compilation (some in progress) is presented with its running time, genre composition, directorial information, its title screen, and a full concise summary of the film's plot, with additional film commentary. The selected films include the two most lauded films of the year, Barbie (2023) (the highest-grossing domestic film of the year) and Oppenheimer (2023), known together affectionately as "Barbenheimer." There were also the usual onslaught of sequels in long-running franchises that often performed poorly (including John Wick, Mission Impossible, Aquaman, Creed, The Hunger Games, Scream, Ant Man, Saw, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc), but those weren't necessarily the 'greatest' or 'best' that the year produced. It was remarkable that the range of great films this last year was as broad and varied as it turned out, including a number of historical or fact-based biopics (Maestro and Air), epics (Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon), a unique and weird sci-fi black comedy (Poor Things), and a tabloid-story based melodrama (May December). There were excellent films for returning auteurs (such as Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher and Hayao Miyazaki), plus a great feature film debut for Celine Song (for Past Lives), and remarkable animations (including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Miyazaki's Japanese anime The Boy and the Heron). See also > > Title Screens - 2023 Films, Academy Awards for 2023 Films |
